Engineering guide / avocado peeling machine selection
How to choose an avocado peeling machine
A peeling machine is selected on the fruit you actually receive, not on a headline capacity. Use the same lot to compare methods and measure what reaches the next stage.
01
Start with the fruit, not the machine
Record cultivar, size distribution, ripeness, peel adhesion and defect rate across several deliveries. A machine that works on firm, uniform fruit may fail on soft or mixed lots. Ask for a trial with fruit from your own supply, including the lower end of the ripeness window you intend to accept.
| Selection point | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fruit size | Sample distribution, not only average | Tool clearance and feed stability |
| Ripeness | Measured firmness and peel adhesion | Smearing, tearing and recovery |
| Skin carryover | Visual and measured check | Fibre, colour and downstream load |
| Stone fragments | Inspection of flesh and discharge | Quality and equipment risk |
| Cleaning time | Full changeover, not a rinse | Available production time |
02
Define what good peeling means
State the acceptable skin carryover, stone breakage, flesh loss and surface damage. Inspect the flesh, not only the peel discharge. A clean-looking peel stream can still hide torn flesh or fragments that will damage the next machine.
03
Compare the preparation methods honestly
Manual preparation gives inspection access and can handle variable fruit, but labour and ergonomics must be measured. Operator-assisted presentation can reduce repetitive handling while keeping a human decision. Mechanical separation can raise throughput but needs a narrower fruit window and a robust cleaning routine.
04
Measure recovery from the same batch
Weigh whole fruit, accepted flesh, skin, stones and rejected tissue separately. Record the time and labour used. Do not compare a machine's instantaneous rate with a manual station's best short run; compare saleable output over a realistic period.
05
Check the cleaning and safety boundary
Ask how tools, screens, guards and discharge chutes are accessed. Confirm safe isolation for tool changes. Inspect for traps where skin, fibre or stones can remain. A machine that is difficult to clean will lose more quality in changeover than it gains in throughput.
